Networking

During this fasting month, all the parents and students are aware that we close early. It's good to see everyone being disciplined about coming on time and leaving on the dot. It makes my job easier.

Recently, I managed to track back some of my old students. Most are at college and some are still in school, but most of them are no longer coming to the centre for extra classes.

Jazeman who's an upcoming F1 driver for Malaysia also wrote messages to me. He remembers the centre and would like to come for a visit.

Some parents who used to send their children to me have also written to me. It's nice to keep in touch because that way, I'll always know how my students are. To me that's important.

Ms Admin

We have a few students at the centre that we feel are uncontrollable. As our students are with us for a few years, most times, we could see how they change as they grow up.

Since I hired Ms Admin, communication with parents are easier because she'd talk about the students behaviour with their parents when she sees them. Sometimes, she'd advice parents on what they should do if they face behavioral problem.

Fasting month

First day of fasting was good yesterday. I didn't have any difficulties. A few non muslim students asked how it's like and I answered them.

Ishan asked me if I was hungry. I told him I was and can't wait to eat at about 7:15pm for breaking fast.

We had a few Muslim students who came to the centre and fasting. They were as young as 8 and they were fasting.

When I was 8, my parents never really pushed me to fast. When I was with my cousins, I would try to fast for half a day. I would challenege myself the next day for longer fasting time.

Fasting to me is like a test for a person of how much a person can take. Not just from not eating and drinking, but also how well they can handle their everyday situation despite fasting. How a person can stay calm and not getting angry over little things.

My Korean students told me that they cannot imagine they can fast the way we do, ever. I could not imagine myself fasting when I was their age.

Normal update

Starting from Thursday, our centre hours will be changed. This is due to the fasting month. Every year, we close at 5 pm on our opening days and we work on Saturday.

Daniel was at the centre today. He's getting better now. However, he would only do his Maths at the 3A to B area. As long as he does not put the centre into a chaos, we let him be. Lately he's been doing his work within 14 mins.

English is not really a problem for him now. He'd sit throughout the one set of CD listening and would read out loud to me after that. At times, he'd read the flash cards.

Arwimo will be moving away soon. He's a transferred student from another centre. He decided to join English with me. I think he has a slight Autism case. Somehow he loves to read. I just love having him reading for us at the centre.

My classroom

I am lucky to have a big area for my classrooms. In the Maths department we have 5 main areas. 1) Pre School area (Level 7A to 4A), 2) Addition and Subtraction Area (Level 3A to B), 3)Multiplication and Division Area (Level C & D), 4) Higher level area (Level E and bove) and 5) Drilling area (flash cards and number boards).

As we don't have that many English students, we decided to have only one area for the English students, but they get the Library!!!

Ex staff turned Fellow Instructor

I was visited by an ex staff yesterday. She actually visited because she wanted to see my other staff. She was my first staff and worked for 5 years before she decided to have her own business. Before she left, she made a remark that she'll never want to do anything with Kumon after that. Maybe because she got bored teaching children.

However, recently I got the news that she has been selected to open her own Kumon centre. I do hope and wish she would stick to it.

I'm sure she'll be able to cope with all the things we instructors have to go through in years to come.

I salute instructors with 20 ++ years of experience. I know one in Osaka who is still running strong and very passionate about it. I do hope to learn more and more. I'm approaching my 9th year.

Great Weekend with Conference

I have been lazy to write lately. That's because I've been so busy with work and my side business.

Last weekend, I attended a very entertaining and great conference. I have never attended a conference that had me laugh so much. It's true when people say laughter is the best medicine. I am totally happy now!!!!

From the conference, I realized my potential. I can do public speaking without fear now!!! I guess I have overcome that somehow.

I was with some good friends there. Jennifer, Stella, Letty and Mrs Lai. It's nice to have friends you can rely on.

I just love where I am right now.

Today, I'm going back to the centre and will make some changes and will start talking with my students about their year end projection. Similar to what I did in May.

Seminar - Part 3

We had 2 participants. Vanessa and Sharon. They were both attentive to the whole seminar. They wanted to know how to become independant learners.

A week after that, they asked what they have to do to be a better student with a better study habit.

I'm glad I have helped them in some ways.
